One/ Day
One / day is a drawing project I set out to accomplish over the course of a little over three months in the summer of 2016. Between May 17th and September 5th there are 111 days and I attempted to finish a piece every day, using mixed media and collage techniques. The idea came to me when a shoulder injury forced me to dramatically scale down my work. Scaling down from 45x55'' to 6x6'' gives me an opportunity work faster and create a large quantity instead of large size. I am interested in time and in my work I often investigate the experiences of displacement and the spaces between then and now, where I come from and where I am, the known and the unknown. This series of works follows a more formal line of investigation, but it has the same element of the unknown. Starting with 111 blank pieces of paper on the wall I am tracking time by letting the events of each day influence and inform the drawings. By giving myself a set of rules, like the size, quantity and committing to working every day kept me engaged with the process and soothed the compulsive need to control things, but also challenged me to face the fear of the unknown.
I took a two-week break to attend a class at Penland School of Crafts. In the mean time, I asked my fellow artists to submit pieces for the show starting June 26th.
